Christmas! Do not be afraid...

by - December 21, 2024

There's always something new to learn from the Bible readings at Christmas....It's amazing how the nativity story never 'grows old'...God's Word is truly living and active. I'm always reminded through the scripture texts that God uses ordinary people who are willing and obedient; regardless of our fears and short-comings, God is able to fulfill mighty things in our otherwise 'simple lives'.

Here's one of the things I learnt through the Christmas stories last year: - Fear often stands between 'just-living' and 'living-all-that-God-has-promised'. Four times in the events recorded, God needed to give this reminder/assurance to the people He had chosen: DO NOT BE AFRAID!

"Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife" - Matt. 1:20
"Do not be afraid Zechariah; your prayer has been heard" - Luke 1:13
"Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God." - Luke 1:30
"Do not be afraid, (shepherds); I bring you good news that will cause great joy to all people." - Luke 2:10

This is my Christmas prayer for us:
When we need to make difficult choices like Joseph, may we not fear; may the Lord use us to obediently fulfill all prophecy relating to our lives, to our families and to the nations.

When we have toiled and wrestled in prayer like Zechariah, may we hear these refreshing words; "Do not fear...your prayer has been heard".

When like Mary, the task God has placed before us looks huge and almost impossible, may these words keep us going - "Do not be afraid; you have found favour with God"....

And when like the shepherds in the field, the glory of the Lord shines so brightly around us, may we receive the Grace to bask in His glory, and the strength and wisdom to rise up and tell all people the GOOD NEWS that causes great joy! Amen. Merry Christmas!

Selah.
