Accra by plan; long vacation or not?

by - July 09, 2023

It was one of my big brother's line of Ghanaian T-shirts (Adinkra casuals) that had a caption - 'Accra by plan' - which has stayed with me since about 2009. Truly, living in Accra is 'by plan' :)....it is useful to have info on what is where and when.

This year, the June - September long vacation in Ghana is a bit varied for many schools. While some are currently home on vacation, other Primary/JHS pupils/students are in school. Whatever the form the season from now till September 2023 would take in the lives of the children in your life, I would like to share some info on some places, activities and useful contacts.

Booksie is great! I love the innovative programs they frequently come up with, e.g. giving opportunity to parents to have a date-night recently. Talk to them. Vacation program starts on July 10th 2023. There are however options for daily or weekly participants. Check out more on Booksie on IG or  here: https://goo.gl/maps/vjayT7sHWEFYLZi46

Those who live in and around Communities 17, 18, 19 & 20 can benefit lots from the Shared Space: SharedSpaceGh I like the multi-purposeful nature of the space, both for children and adults. Parents who want their children to learn any of these local languages (Ewe, Ga, Twi) could contact the Local Languages Club at the Shared Space. Piano lessons are also available to both children and adults.

Vacation Bible School! I witnessed the 2022 version at the Legon Interdenominational Church and it was awesome for all children who participated. I love the fact that this program brings together volunteers and participants from various Christian denominations, encouraging ecumenism. This year, I am thrilled that the organizers have included a condensed session, taking into consideration the fact that not all those who would like to participate would be available for the week-long session. Kudos to the crew! Registration ends on 14th July 2023.

Those in and around Lakeside Estate, Accra - contact Kinder Square for some holiday fun!

In conclusion:
I usually prefer activities that are out of the environs of the schools children attend, just so they get to learn, play and interact with different/new teachers, adults and other children. NB - that is not to say that the vacation activities put together by various schools are not great. There are lots of awesome ones you could subscribe to. I'm just mentioning options for a little bit of variety :)

If you have family and friends out of Accra whom you can visit for a change of environment, I encourage that too :) Visits, far and near, are great. Older children could be considered for some sports too, plus the acquisition of a skill or two ('home-econs-like' :) ironing, sewing, cooking, etc)

REST too!

If you haven't yet subscribed to Devotion Time with Ms T, today is a good day to do so :) Awesome Bible Stories - https://youtu.be/muN7mcWfEd0

Mmofra Park, Legon Botanical Gardens, e-Ananse library (e-Ananse Library), excursions, road-trips, a train ride, etc. I could go on and on....contact me on akuaasabeagh@gmail.com if there's something you think I could assist with. Kindly share any more 'Accra by plan' info with me too. Sharing is caring :)

God bless and keep us all!

Love,

Akua Asabea.
